Camino de Santiago

My children Roy, Tom, Emil went to Spain last October 22 to do the Camino Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage. They enplaned from their homes and met in Madrid. The Camino was a walking pilgrimage to the shrine where St. James the apostle was buried. It had many starting points. My children began their walk from Astorga. They sort of planned this trip two years ago. They had other commitments but they were set to do this task together for two weeks.

Emil had to shed weight for he was kind of leaning into obesity. His girlfriend Sui Ling helped him in the process and he was able to lose around 30 pounds before he embarked on this journey. Their Canadian cousin Sharleen who had been into this pilgrimage several times before gave them lots of tips. Everybody else in the family gave their moral support. This mother though, although encouraging was really scared. My children were more sickly than other kids when they were young. Roy was a severe asthmatic, highly allergic to dust, pollens, shellfish and many others. He was under asthma medication, even until now. Tom, although the more athletic boy, had problems with flat feet and bad back. Emil, my youngest son was short, stocky and clumsy. He easily hurt and bruised physically. They all had different temperaments and they had not live with each other for awhile since college. So even before their journey began, I was already admonishing them to be patient with one other and not to quarrel.

This pilgrimage was religious in nature. My boys were practicing Catholics. For one, they were all Sunday mass goers. When their plan to walk pushed through to commence this October, I was kind of comforted that they were doing the camino during the month of October- the month of the holy rosary; and in the year 2016 which was the jubilee year of  mercy. For surely God will be merciful to them.

So I followed their journey everyday........Emil and Roy were posting their daily walk on facebook, while Tom shared information once in awhile. Emil gave a more detailed account, and Roy was posting more on the highlights of the travel. I experienced joy and emotional pain and concerns for their well being. True to my prediction, Emil was having the hardest time of all. They walked through rugged road, mud, stones, wind, rain, fog, burning sun, steep elevation and deep decline, even on cow dungs etc. Emil had blisters on all his toes, Tom was walking crookedly, Roy with ankle pains, not to mention other sores and issues. They slept on communal hostel but they got to eat good meal after a hard day trek. I was wretched and miserable, afraid they might not get to Compostela on time. Their schedule was too tight, no allowance for extra days. I was so afraid they might not make it. They did not have the leisure to do another come back. So I prayed constantly for God to have mercy on my sons. I asked for the blessed Mother to assist them as she did St. James and for their guardian angels to guide them on their way. For me, it was so important for them to finish this walk. Their self confidence and faith were at stake. At one point I also asked for the assistance of Archangel Gabriel, whom my son Emil was named after for Emil's full name was Emil Gabriel.

I went to church to pray for them. Inside the church, I looked at Jesus on the cross, now I understood more clearly how hard was his walk to Calvary. He walked with thorns on his head and blood flowing on his face. His body was covered with sores and wounds from cruel scourging, blisters on his feet and to add it all, a very heavy cross to carry on his shoulder. He fell trice from the weight of the cross, scraping his knees and elbows........He suffered so on his way to Calvary.

I looked at the statue of St. Joseph. He traveled from Galilee to Bethlehem with a pregnant wife, Mary. He walked with the help of a stick and attended to Mary. So noble of him. They had no inn to stay and Mary gave birth to the child Jesus on a stable. After Bethlehem, they walked to Egypt with the infant under the harsh Middle East weather - St. Joseph, now I see more clearly why you have a walking staff on your hand,

And St. James, on your way to Spain to preach the good news of the Lord, you encountered so much pain and hardship, that you called on our blessed Mother for help and she came appearing to you on a pillar, although she was actually bodily far away living in Greece during that time. She came and promised to help. This was her first miraculous appearance according to our Roman Catholic tradition. St. James, you made it to Spain and successfully preached the gospel of the Lord - "St. James, my children are on their way to Santiago Compostela. Please help them too."

And when Roy, Tom and Emil finally reached Compostela, From the picture posted by Tom, their faces were etched with pain and so much joy, I was equally overwhelmed with joy and emotion.Their pilgrimage was my pilgrimage too. Thank you O Lord! Despite their hardship, you brought them whole and safely and soundly to their destination. Thank you our blessed mother, Thank you too to all the angels and saints. Thank you so much.

Buen Camino!

Pilgrimages

Last September 2016, my husband Lucas and I, together with my sister Helen; in line with the celebration of the jubilee year of mercy, visited several churches of the archdiocese of Manila. We entered the designated holy doors of Manila Cathedral, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy in Mandaluyong City, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Pasay City, and the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati City. My husband and I also tried to enter as often as we can the holy door of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Cubao, and I have been doing my own personal pilgrimages too here, passing through the holy door of Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Cotabato City.
This Jubilee Year, I need to come to the Lord, to ask for mercy and blessings. As we obtain mercy and pardon from God, the Catholic Church likewise is teaching its faithful to perform acts of mercy towards others too. For me the virtue of charity is the hardest thing ever, owing to the fact that we are inherently selfish. I hope, that through the grace of God, I shall be drawn to exercise this virtue in my own small ways.

Several years ago, during the onset of the Year of Faith, I was in Lourdes, France. It was a pilgrimage of a life time. I was there with my husband and children (except Tom). We spent 4 days and three nights: drank the healing water, took the bath, prayed the rosary nightly, went through the 'way of the cross', attended morning masses, lighted candles etc. It was a pilgrimage of a life time, for I had had no intention to do pilgrimages abroad, it being so far and costly. It was just so timely that my daughter Marion was finishing her MA in UK and we went there as a family to visit her and to come back home with her. And since France was nearby, I could not pass this chance to visit Lourdes. Was I ever thankful of this opportunity!!! Thank you so much.

This October, my sons namely Roy, Tomas and Emil are presently in Spain doing the Camino de Santiago. It is a walking pilgrimage to Campostela where St. James, the apostle was buried. They are doing the 2 weeks strenuous walk and I have been following their journey ever since they left home. Their pilgrimage is like my pilgrimage too, for I feel that it is a feather on my cap to have brought them up to love their Catholic faith. I will be happy and proud if they finished well this journey. May the Lord be with them always. May our blessed mother helped them along the way. May the holy angels guide them along the difficult paths.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy.

In Faith

Today October 7 is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. I have been praying the rosary since I became a young caring mother to my children. My children were mostly very sickly. I could not in my own capacity cope up with them. I was frantic, ignorant, worthless and wretched. I could not simply endure the many problems and trials that came my way. I was a total wreck, so I came to the Divine Mother for help. Reciting the rosary has calmed me down. It has helped me in times of difficulty. Sometimes help comes fast and sometimes even miraculously predestined in times of danger. Through my prayers, I have become more hopeful and trusting. Even though some prayers take time to be answered, and although at times it may seem so difficult to accept the will of God, yet I will continue to hold on to the string of beads in my hand and with the help of God, may it strengthen my faith even more. Reciting the rosary keeps me going. Now that I am nearing 65 years old, I am more scared of what the future holds. I am only comforted at the thought of our loving Lord who died on the cross for us. And that my divine mother who held him close to her bosom has taught me a way to get near him by constantly praying the rosary.

On this occasion of the Feast of Our Lady, let me show you some of my rosaries:
Fragrant red beads on the living room buffet table. I use this almost daily.
Rosary from Rome given by cousin Nelly Co, is on my bedside.
My traveling rosary, given to me by Tom after a year of exchanged student program stint from Oregon.
Rosary from Fatima, Portugal given by sister-in-law Conchita Tan.
From Jerusalem given by Mildred Lim.
A bracelet rosary from Boracay given by sister-in-law Jean Ledesma. I dipped this one in the pool water of Lourdes, France. It used to be my traveling rosary before but the crucifix got detached on the plane during one of my flights. I still keep this inside my bag.

Irritating Day.......

Today is a beautiful Sunday but I must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed:
1. At breakfast, I am irritated by my husband many questions.
2. After breakfast, he confronts me regarding my anger prone irritability.
3. "Because you think I have all the answers to all your questions." comes my defensive answer. "We have all the same source of information which is the facebook. I don't know everything."
4. But I do feel sorry for getting irritable though. I know it is my fault. In any case, I just do not like my husband to depend too much on me. He has been like that recently, asking for my consent and letting me do most of our family and or personal decisions for him. I have been his source of family information too and I just want him to be more independent. I just so want him to be more physically and mentally alert and capable.
5. Today is Sunday. We arrive church about 15 minutes before the mass. But the parish church this morning is just simply too noisy. Inside the church, I try to pray. I am all trying to tapper down my temper after that short spat with my husband. I need so much to control myself emotionally and spiritually. But how can anybody pray with such a din!
6. Then Anita Yu, coming from her chit-chat all around the church, sits down infront of me and my husband. "Hi kumusta?! Kumusta na?" She bubbly and loudly greets me. I put a finger to my mouth to hush her loud social greetings. She does not get my gesture and continues  with "How many grandchildren do you have already?" I try very hard to smile and answer her with my two fingers. (Meaning two.) But she can not seem to get it still. "Why, you lost your voice?" She asks. In any circumstances, it could have been comical, but I am not feeling any cheery this morning. Again I make a 'hush hush' gesture with my finger over my mouth and say softly. "I am praying." But she continues to be dumbfounded. Oh my, doesn't she ever know that this is a church?!
7. During the mass, during the 'peace' greeting, Anita Yu avoids me. I think she is clueless and must have been offended. Sometimes I come out harshly snobbish. So now I have do some damage control....oh my!
8. After the mass, I tap her shoulder and say. "I did not answer you awhile ago because I was praying."...."Oh sorry, I thought you lost your voice." She reply.
9. After the mass, Mrs. Lily Uy and her family invite the parishioners to a brunch at the social hall in thanksgiving for her recovery from her illness. She was hospitalized twice very recently from cough and fever, and from hypoglycemia. The Cardinal Quevedo is present for the occasion, and as usual I have observed the center stage being hugged by the ever attention seeker devorah tan-abing at church and at social gatherings. Infact I call her "Ms Presidential table" in contrast to "Ms presidentiable" to myself, because she is ever ready at the presendential table with the dignitaries. Well, maybe sour graping on my part because she is that rich and popular. But honestly I just hate it when people accost her with such nobility, even our parish priest and the cardinal himself. When the cardinal approaches our table, I stand up and kiss his ring with reverence. Others shake his hand and many other ladies hug him and make beso beso (pecking of the cheek). I kind of get pissed off with this kind of familiarity. Hey ladies, he is the cardinal, do you know that?
9. Before going home, I realize I lost my folding umbrella. Geez, I just can not recall where I misplace it.
10. Arriving home, my maid asks permission to sleep out tonight. I am doubly agitated. I scold her. "This will be the last time you're going t ask to sleep out. I am not going to permit you the next time."
11. I hope and pray that the day will not get any worse.
12. Despite everything, a blessed Sunday to you all.

Updates: I am able to retrieve my lost umbrella. I left it inside the church.

This Month of September 2016

This September 2016 ushers in an auspicious month, with September 1st, officially ending the so called 'ghost month' coming from the Chinese traditional belief based on the lunar calendar. In the Philippines, it is the start of the 'Ber' months where Christmas carols are beginning to be heard all over the radio, malls, offices and at homes. I booked my plane tickets at the Philippine airline office, and I joyfully heard my first Christmas carols this September 1st.

September 5 this year is the 37th birthday of my youngest son Emil Gabriel. Somehow this year is a turning point of his career life. He left his good paying job at Ayala Land two months ago to look for a career changing business opportunity. And Emil has finally chosen to go back to Cebu this September 7 to work at Cebu Service Parts, a company partly owed by the Tan (LCT) family. My heart is disturbed that he is leaving the secured family abode in Manila and is leaving his girl friend temporarily behind in Manila as well. Besides I don't entirely know his ultimate plan at all and I am deeply anxious about his career and love life. I have a lot of concern for him to be successful in his chosen field of work and of his future endeavors. I also want him to get married and have a family of his own, if only his girlfriend is strong and healthy enough for such a life long task......I worry so much for him because his paths to me seem so indefinite. O God please help him! Have mercy and bless him, O Lord!

I worry about my daughter Martha Lauren as well. She is left alone in Manila, although thankfully Sui Ling the girlfriend of Emil is staying with her at home. Martha is so simple and quiet that she does not attract boys. She is smart but guys seem to be intimidated by her intelligence. She is of age but is still single. I don't want her to be alone all her life. I am so much concerned about her in this regard.  I pray that the Lord will be kind and bless her with the future right man of her life. So I constantly pray for her, and for all of my other children too.

Getting back to one of the many blessed days this September was the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta on September 4. On this special occasion, I beseeched that she pray for this family and all my children to our Father in heaven above.

Today is another beautiful day. Today September 8 is the birthday of the mother of our Savior. Our Blessed Mother has many titles. I venerate her as my 'Mother of Perpetual Help', 'Immaculate Virgin Mary', 'Immaculate Conception', 'Our Lady of Lourdes', 'Our Lady of Mount Carmel', 'Queen of Heaven and Earth', 'Queen of Angels', 'Queen of Peace', 'Help of Christians', 'Queen of the Family', and 'Queen of our Homes'. This morning, my husband and I attended the first mass at our parish church, the priest Father Charlie Celeste gave a beautiful sermon. It touched my heart. The context was something like......Our redemption begun when Mary gave her "YES" to God to be the mother of our Savior. During those times, it was a nightmare for this young girl to be pregnant without a husband. It was a nightmare too for Joseph to be bethroded to a pregnant woman whose baby was not his own. But God spoke to them through an angel and the angel said "BE NOT AFRAID." ...TRUST IN THE LORD....HAVE FAITH IN GOD ALWAYS! ........Thank you O blessed Mother! You know, in my heart I know this homily was meant for me too,.... this homily was meant for me!....and I shall not be afraid!

Thank you my God!
For all my concerns, I will not be afraid. I will trust in the Lord. I will have faith in you always. Thank you so much!

After July 4th, came Redmond Derby Days. There were all kinds of competitions in town: running, bicycle racing, etal. The town center was very gay. There was a free concert at the park at night and we went around the carnival fair too after supper. We were so lucky to have participated in all these July celebrations without even planning them. Thank God for all these wonderful holidays and vacation opportunities spent with my husband Lucas, my son Roy and my daughter Martha. Thank you very much!

Chihuly Glass and Garden

Free family picture at the garden.
Colorful ethnic weaves inside the museum.
Glass sculptures inside the museum.
Beautiful glass hangings.
At the garden - glass sculptures complimented the beautiful blossoms.
These were real blossoms. So beautiful!
 Enjoying with Roy and Martha.
It was drizzling on our way out, the Chihuly Glass and Garden was located near the Space Needle. We decided to take a photo with the Seattle's famous landmark.
We also took a picture with this sculpture near the Space Needle area. Let me tell you, the new generations do not even know that this sculpture is a piece of office (typewriter) eraser. Hehehe.
